Our affordable housing project gets the stamp of approval.
We are celebrating after receiving approval of our development application to Lismore City Council. Affordable housing is a growing need in our community – this approval is a major step in addressing this need and we’re excited to share this news.
The approved development includes four two-bedroom units, six one-bedroom units, a communal area on each floor of the building, a rooftop entertaining area with an outdoor kitchen, ten garden plots for residents, a coffee shop, ground floor car park, toilets and solar power!
Our CEO Jenni Beetson-Mortimer says:
“This development meets a growing social need in Lismore. It will increase housing availability in the CBD, it utilises the space over our carpark and is within walking access to local shops and services. Most importantly, it will revatalise Lismore CBD with a modern and sustainable development.”
Research undertaken locally by Southern Cross University and more recently in the Australian Human Rights Commission 2019 report into homelessness highlights the vulnerability of older women to homelessness.
The risk factors identified include being single, having lifelong caring responsibilities, losing a partner, relationship difficulties, lower levels of income and part time or casualised work. Any and all of these factors can lead to older women’s economic disadvantage, impacting on their savings or limited superannuation.
