Tax Help and Fines (WDOs)

Dealing with tax and fines can feel overwhelming, especially when you’re not sure where to start. We’re here to help so you don’t have to face it alone.

Overview

Navigate tax and fines with support.

We offer a program to support in completing simple tax returns, as well as help reducing fines through Work and Development Orders (WDOs).

Don’t let taxes and fines build up. You can work with us to get on top of your taxes, and reduce or eliminate your fines through activities like volunteering, counselling, training or treatment programs.

What type of tax support can I access?

The Tax Help program is run by the ATO and helps eligible people earning $70,000 or less to lodge simple tax returns online. ATO accredited volunteers provide support at Community Gateway from July to October each year.

What is a Work Development Order (WDO)?

Work Development Orders support people in the community who can’t pay their fines to clear their debt and start fresh. Those who are eligible can reduce their fine by up to $1,000 a month by doing unpaid work, courses, counselling, mentoring or treatment programs.

How do I know if I’m eligible for a Work Development Order (WDO)?

You are eligible for a WDO if you meet at least one of the following conditions:

  • You are experiencing serious financial hardship.
  • You are experiencing a mental health condition.
  • You have an intellectual or cognitive disability.
  • You are experiencing homelessness.
  • You are experiencing alcohol or substance abuse.
  • You are under 18 years of age.
