We’re reducing emissions by diverting edible food from landfill.

We’re reducing emissions by diverting edible food from landfill.

We’re scaling up our regional Food Rescue and Relief Program across the Northern Rivers, with new funding from the NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA).

The program will coordinate donor food collections across the region in a refrigerated vehicle, and will annually:

  • Rescue over 4-tonnes of quality food
  • Deliver 16,000 nutritious meals to people in need
  • Reduce emissions by diverting edible food from landfill

Our existing emergency food relief program provided 11,230 meals in 2024-2025, with 1.6-tonnes rescued from Coles, SecondBite and local cafes.

This funding provides Community Gateway with a cold-chain transport vehicle, allowing for more structured collection routes and significant savings in fuel and time, which in turn allows for more food rescued from more partners, and more meals delivered.

The service will operate out of our Lismore office, with participating partners in Kyogle, Byron Bay, Murwillumbah and Casino to provide service across the region.
