In memory of our IT Officer Terry, one staff member has written this poem:

Ode to Terry.

Your glasses lay upon the desk, your tea grows cold and dim;
A pen sits where you left it waiting for you to walk in.

The computers hum unknowing that your fingers won’t return;
To dance across the keyboard fixing things without concern.

I’ll miss slinking into your office requesting Gatorade and toast;
And making you white tea with one. But the thing I’ll miss the most…

Are our talks about life and gems and comics, movies and a foreign place;
While you fix my Remote Desktop, or reinstall what I’ve erased.

I’ll miss knowing you are waiting while I finish counselling a client;
So I don’t have to leave the office alone in the darkness and the quiet.

I’m sure you are up there chilling with the Angels in the clouds;
The sunset on the day you passed looked like God was shining down.

The greatest souls leave the biggest holes in the lives of those they leave;
You will always be a sparkling thread in Gateway’s rich tapestry.

Throughout Community Gateway, our staff are currently remembering IT Officer Terry Houlahan and reflecting on his passing. Here are some words written by one staff member:

Terry I will miss you.

Our chapter has come to an end but I know you walk with me in my memories.

It was a chapter I’ll never forget. A colleague then a friendship that grew.

I am left with only great memories, laughter and a friendship that others probably never knew.

When my computer isn’t working I’m still looking for you.

A few tears of sadness knowing you’re not in the next chapter is alarming.

So I sit in the rubble of my own feelings wishing this wasn’t true.

My friend I will miss ringing you and just talking like we used to.

My motherboard, my colleague and friend you will remain a joyful chapter.

I will never forget your kindness nor our Christmas parties with you.

Until we meet again. X

Northern Rivers Community Gateway bids farewell to our IT Officer Terry Houlahan. Terry passed away on Sunday night after a short illness.

Terry came to Australia from Canada and started working with Community Gateway in 2015 as our first full time IT Officer. During this time he had a significant impact on our IT systems and also on our organisation as a whole.

Terry challenged us to take on new and innovative ideas and solutions. He wasn’t just the IT guy though. He was always involved and participated in everything we did at Community Gateway. He was the first to offer help and the last to leave, whether that was a fair day, a BBQ or doing the IT for our conferences and forums. He never shied away from anything and he always wanted to help.

He was a warm and kind person and a friend to so many. He will be missed by all.
